Where to stay in Lofoten: the short answer

Choose your base by what you want to do. Reine and Hamnøy are the choice for classic fishing village scenery and the climb to Reinebringen. Svolvær is where the Trollfjord cruises depart, and it is also a Hurtigruten port, so it suits anyone who wants boat tours close by. Henningsvær is a quiet island village with galleries. Leknes is a practical base with an airport and a bus hub.

The islands are long, and a single base cannot cover everything. Many visitors split their stay between two bases. How the islands fit together is shown on our Lofoten road trip page. This page quotes no room prices, because those change with the date and the unit.

For most first-time visitors with three or more nights, two bases work well: Reine or Hamnøy for the scenery and the hike, and Svolvær for boat tours and an easy arrival. Pick one base only if you have a car and a short stay, and use the page on getting to Lofoten to plan how you arrive.

Our pick: from the harbour in Svolvær

Our take: a short kayak tour that starts in town, handy if you stay in Svolvær.

Reine and Hamnøy

Traditional fishing cabins are used as places to stay in the Moskenes area, including Hamnøy and Reine. Reine is also a lived-in fishing village between the Vestfjord and the Reinefjord. That makes it a good base for photographers and for the Reinebringen hike, but it is not a hotel resort, and the streets are narrow. Respect privacy, and do not touch the stockfish that hangs to dry.

Read our guide to Lofoten rorbuer for what to check before you book. The view of the village from above is on the page for Reine and Hamnøy.

Svolvær and Henningsvær

Svolvær is the departure point of Trollfjord boat tours and a Hurtigruten port. That makes it a sensible base if you plan one or two boat days and want a short walk to the harbor. The northern lights minibus tour also leaves from here in the dark season.

Henningsvær lies on small islands connected by bridges off the main island of Austvågøya. The village has hotels, apartments and rorbuer, as well as galleries and restaurants. It is not directly on the E10. The bus from Svolvær runs via Kabelvåg, and the village asks visitors to park on the larger car parks and explore on foot. Details on the village are on our Henningsvær page.

Leknes and the wider area

Leknes has an airport with a connection to Bodø and is a hub for local buses. It suits you if you arrive by air, rent a car and want a central place to start. It is not a postcard village, and it is not necessarily cheaper or closer to every beach than other bases. Check the distances for your own plans.

If you continue north on the same trip, where to stay in Tromsø covers the next big town. For the region as a whole, see Northern Norway.

Booking tips for Lofoten stays

  • Compare for your dates. Prices, minimum nights and cancellation rules depend on the date and the unit.
  • Ask about facilities. A kitchen, sauna or private bathroom cannot be assumed in every cabin.
  • Check parking. Villages like Reine have little space, and the road is narrow.
  • Plan for the overnight fee. No general Lofoten fee applies in 2026. Municipalities may charge one from 2027, so check the rules for your dates.
  • Match the base to the season. See the best time to visit Lofoten for when the aurora, the midnight sun and the hiking season fall.

Where to stay in Lofoten: frequently asked questions

Which area should I stay in Lofoten?

It depends on your plans. Reine and Hamnøy fit scenery and hiking, Svolvær fits boat tours, Henningsvær fits a quiet evening with galleries, and Leknes fits flights and buses.

Where should I stay for the northern lights?

The lights are never guaranteed, and any base with a dark sky can work. Svolvær is the start of a northern lights minibus tour in the dark season. See the northern lights page.

Is Henningsvær on the main road?

No. It lies on bridge-linked islands off Austvågøya and is not directly on the E10. A bus runs from Svolvær via Kabelvåg.

Should I stay in one place or move between bases?

The islands are long. Two bases, such as Reine and Svolvær, cover more with less driving than one, if you stay three nights or more.

Do I have to pay a tourist tax in Lofoten?

Not generally in 2026. Municipalities may charge an overnight fee from 2027. Check the current rules when you book.

Does this site sell rooms?

No. This is an independent Lofoten travel guide, not an accommodation provider and not run by a tourism board.
