What is a rorbu?
A rorbu (plural rorbuer) is a fishermen's cabin, traditionally built at the water's edge for fishermen who came to the Lofoten Islands for the season. Many of these cabins now serve as accommodation, which is why a rorbu stay is one of the classic ways to sleep in Lofoten. Not every unit that is sold as a rorbu is an unchanged historic original, so look at the description and photos before you book.
This page explains where rorbuer are found and what to check. If you want to see the villages from the water, the page on Lofoten boat tours lists the trips from Svolvær. For the wider choice of areas and hotels, see where to stay in Lofoten.

Where to find a rorbu in Lofoten
Traditional cabins are used as places to stay in several coastal villages. These are the main ones.
| Village | Setting | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Reine | Working fishing village between the Vestfjord and the Reinefjord | Narrow streets, the Reinebringen climb behind it |
| Hamnøy | Fishing village with red rorbuer | Close to Reine, popular with photographers |
| Sørvågen and Tind | Smaller villages in Moskenes | Fishermen's cabins are available here too |
| Å | End of the E10, with the fishing village museum | Historic buildings show village and fishing life |
| Nusfjord | Historic village presented as a resort | Check day-visitor access and any fee before you arrive |
| Henningsvær | Island village linked by bridges | Hotels, apartments and rorbuer, plus galleries and restaurants |
For most first-time visitors who want the classic red cabins, Reine and Hamnøy are the place to start. Henningsvær suits those who want galleries and a bit more choice for hotels and apartments. A view of the village is on our Reine and Hamnøy and Henningsvær pages.

What to check before you book
Rorbuer differ a lot, and you cannot assume the same standard everywhere. One rorbu in Reine may have its own kitchen, but that does not mean every rorbu has a kitchen, a sauna or a private bathroom. Ask for the facts that matter to you.
- Kitchen and bathroom: private or shared, and what is included.
- Bedding and cleaning: included or extra, and who does the final cleaning.
- Location: a sea view is not guaranteed by the word rorbu.
- Parking: where your car goes, especially in narrow villages like Reine.
- Terms: minimum nights and cancellation rules for your dates.
Prices depend on dates, number of guests and the unit, so compare offers for your own travel days. If the question is the month, our guide to the best time to visit Lofoten helps.

Staying in a working village
Reine is a lived-in fishing village, and fish is still landed and processed there. Treat the streets and the harbor as someone's workplace and home. Respect private areas, keep your voice down in the evening and do not touch stockfish that hangs on the racks to dry.
The Norwegian Fishing Village Museum in Å shows historic buildings from village and fishing life. In the 1 October to 6 December 2026 period the adult ticket is NOK 125, and the museum is closed from 7 December 2026 to 2 January 2027. Opening hours differ by date, so check them before you go.
Rorbu, hotel or apartment?
A rorbu gives you the setting: a small cabin by the harbor, often with a room to cook, and the feeling of a working village around you. A hotel or apartment can give you more services or more space. Henningsvær offers all three types, so it is a good place to compare them for your dates.
Choose a rorbu if the atmosphere matters most and you are happy to check the details first. Choose another type if you need a specific facility, such as step-free access or a reception desk. In either case, ask what is included before you pay.
