Lofoten weather and daylight through the year
The weather on the islands can shift within a day. Winter runs roughly from November to March, with changing snow, rain and wind. Wind matters more than the air temperature for most plans, because it decides whether a mountain path or a boat trip is a good idea.
Daylight is the bigger planning factor. In early summer the sun stays up through the night on the coast, and in midwinter it never clears the horizon. Choose your travel dates by the light you want, then keep a flexible day or two for the weather.
Boat trips depend on conditions too. The Trollfjord cruise operator cancels when the sea is uncertain. See Lofoten boat tours for seasons and rebooking.

Seasons, light and what to plan
Dates are approximate and depend on the place.
| Period | Light and conditions | What to plan |
|---|---|---|
| 28 May to 14 July | Midnight sun, 25 May to 18 July at Uttakleiv | Evening walks, coast spots with a clear northern horizon |
| May to September | Hiking season for Reinebringen and Mannen | Wind, fog and rain decide each day |
| September to April | Dark skies for the northern lights | A clear sky matters more than the month |
| November to March | Winter, with changing snow, rain and wind | Reinebringen is not advised in winter; allow extra time on the road |
| About 7 December to 5 January | Polar night, twilight at midday | Short days for sightseeing, long nights for the lights |
For most visitors, late May to early July gives the longest days and open hiking paths, while September combines the start of the dark season with the end of the hiking season, though ice is possible on the paths in early autumn. Winter suits travellers who want the lights and are comfortable with snow and wind.

How weather affects your plans
Hikes, boats, beaches and light.
Hiking in wind, fog and rain
Do not do the Reinebringen climb in strong wind, fog or rain, and wind above 10 m/s is especially dangerous. In winter there are avalanches, ice and snow, and ice can appear in early autumn as well. Bring sturdy shoes, water and extra clothing. Brightness in summer does not make a route safe.
Hiking guide →Boat trips and cancellations
The Trollfjord cruise operator cancels in uncertain conditions and offers a rebooking or a refund. Not every rain forecast leads to a cancellation, so check on the day before you decide.
Beaches and swimming
Do not count on warm water. At Kvalvika, swimming is at your own risk, with cold water, waves and currents and no lifeguard. Wrap up even on bright days when you walk the beach.
Beaches guide →The northern lights
The lights need darkness, a clear sky and solar activity. Rough season is September to April. A cloudy night shows nothing, so give yourself several evenings.
Northern lights guide →The midnight sun
The sun can be hidden behind mountains from some spots, so the outer coast works best. Hov, Eggum, Laukvik and Uttakleiv are good places to try. Svolvær and Leknes are not reliable sea horizons.
Midnight sun guide →Roads and ferries in winter
The ferry from Bodø to Moskenes runs on a winter timetable from 7 September 2026. The road from Evenes takes longer in winter. Check road and ferry status on the day.
Getting to Lofoten →A simple weather routine
Three habits that save a trip.
Check the forecast twice
Look the evening before and again in the morning. Swap a hike for a village day when the wind is up.
Keep a spare day
Leave one day open for each key plan, such as the hike, the boat trip or the lights.
Pack in layers
Bring a wind-proof outer layer, a warm middle layer, hat and gloves, and sturdy footwear.
Plan the rest of your trip
Pick your season next.
