Best time to visit Lofoten
There is no single best month. The islands offer different things in different seasons: northern lights in the dark months, the midnight sun in early summer and hiking from May to September. Decide first what matters most, then pick the window that fits.
Tours follow the same pattern. The guided northern lights minibus from Svolvær runs from 1 September to 1 April, while the natural phenomenon can reach beyond those dates. Our page on Lofoten tours lists what runs in which season.
Treat the advice on this page as a planning aid. Nobody can promise a sighting of the lights, a clear midnight sky or a dry hiking day.

The right window by goal
Dates are approximate and depend on the place and the weather.
| Goal | Window | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Northern lights | September to April | Needs a dark, clear sky; open north-facing beaches suit it |
| Northern lights minibus from Svolvær | 1 September to 1 April | NOK 1,295 adults, NOK 995 ages 8 to 17, about 4 hours |
| Midnight sun | 28 May to 14 July | 25 May to 18 July at Uttakleiv; outer coast works best |
| Reinebringen and Mannen | May to September | Not in strong wind, fog or rain |
| Festvågtind | Summer and early autumn | May to December only if snow allows |
| Trollfjord cruise from Svolvær | 1 February to end of October | NOK 1,490 for adults |
| RIB sea eagle trip and fishing trip | All year | RIB NOK 1,350 or NOK 1,095 depending on the operator; fishing NOK 1,095 |
| Polar night | About 7 December to 5 January | Twilight at midday |
For most first visits, late May to early July gives long light and open hiking paths. If the lights are your priority, September is a good start because the dark sky returns while the hiking season is still open. Winter is for travellers who accept snow, wind and short days.

Choosing by what you want to do
Each goal has its own season.
For the northern lights
Pick the dark months, from September to April as a rough guide. The lights need darkness, a clear sky and solar activity, and beaches with an open northern horizon are good search areas. The Svolvær minibus leaves at 19:00 with a meeting point at 18:45, carries up to 8 guests and is not recommended under 12.
Northern lights guide →For the midnight sun
Go from late May to mid July, and aim for the outer coast. Hov, Eggum, Laukvik and Uttakleiv are good places to try, and mountains can block the sun from some spots. Svolvær and Leknes are not guaranteed sea horizons.
Midnight sun guide →For hiking
The classic hikes run from May to September. Reinebringen is steep and not advised in winter conditions, and ice is possible in early autumn. Check wind and path conditions the same day.
Hiking guide →For boats and the sea
The Trollfjord cruise runs from 1 February to the end of October, so it covers more than summer. The RIB and fishing trips run all year. Beach water stays cold, so do not plan around swimming.
Boat tours →For quiet beaches and shoulder months
May and September are the months where seasons overlap: hiking and early midnight sun in May, hiking and returning dark skies in September. This is a planning suggestion, not a promise of empty beaches or lower prices.
Beaches guide →For winter and polar night
From about 7 December to 5 January the sun stays below the horizon, with twilight at midday. Plan short days and long nights, and read about the Lofoten weather first.
