Midnight sun in Lofoten at a glance

In Lofoten the sun does not set for several weeks in early summer. The general window runs from 28 May to 14 July, and it shifts with the place. At Uttakleiv it runs from 25 May to 18 July. No single date range is right for every island, so use these as a guide, not as a promise.

What you see depends on your horizon. Mountains can hide the sun even when it is above the horizon, and the north and outer coast, including Hov, Eggum, Laukvik and Uttakleiv, gives the clearest views. Svolvær and Leknes are not reliable sea-horizon spots. If you want to join a boat trip in the bright evening, start with Lofoten boat tours, since trips run on fixed schedules.

For most visitors, a good plan is an evening at Uttakleiv or another open outer-coast spot between early June and early July, with a clear sky. Take a few evenings, since clouds decide what you see.

A night at Uttakleiv

Open coast, rocks and a long beach.

Uttakleiv is a well-known place for the midnight sun. Parking is paid with plate recognition: cars up to 3.5 t and motorbikes pay NOK 60 per started 3 hours, motorhomes NOK 100 per 3 hours, and these categories cap at NOK 300 per 24 hours. Toilets are open all year and designated camping areas exist. Larger vehicles and caravans have other rates, so check the sign.

More on this beach and others is in the Lofoten beaches guide.

Hiking and camping in bright nights

Light does not mean safe.

Light is not a safety check

General midnight sun pages mention mountain tours, but the safety rules for hikes such as Reinebringen still apply. Wind above 10 m/s, fog and rain make it dangerous, however bright the sky. The season is May to September.

Fire and grilling

From 15 April to 15 September a general ban applies in and near forest and other open country. Beaches usually fall under it, with exceptions only where there is clearly no fire risk or you have permission. Local rules can be stricter.

Dogs

Keep dogs on a lead from 1 April to 20 August. In Flakstad the rule extends to 15 November in areas with grazing animals. Local signs come first.

Tents and drones in Lofotodden

In the national park, pitch tents on firm ground and stay no more than 2 nights in the same place. Drones are not allowed without permission. Do not disturb wildlife or nesting birds.

The sun low on the horizon

The other half of the year

Polar night in December.

The sun stays below the horizon from about 7 December to 5 January, yet there is twilight around midday. Exact dates depend on the place. If you want to compare the seasons, read the best time to visit Lofoten and the Lofoten weather page, and northern lights in Lofoten for the dark months.

Tromsø has its own dates for the same phenomenon, see the midnight sun in Tromsø guide.

Planning a bright evening

Practical points for the weeks without a real night.

Watch the sky, not the clock

The sun is up all night, but clouds on the horizon hide it. Keep your plans flexible and pick the clearest evening of a few.

Check wind and weather first

An open outer coast is also an exposed one. Wind and rain can arrive quickly, so bring warm and waterproof layers even in July.

Book boat trips in advance

The Trollfjord cruise runs from February to the end of October, from Svolvær, and the sea eagle trips run almost all year. Departures are mostly in the morning, so check whether an evening sailing exists for your date.

Plan your sleep

Bright nights are tiring. Choose accommodation with good curtains and give yourself a rest day after a late evening.

Midnight sun in Lofoten: frequently asked questions

When is the midnight sun in Lofoten?

The general window is 28 May to 14 July, shifting by place. At Uttakleiv it runs from 25 May to 18 July. Treat these as a guide.

Where can I see it?

The north and outer coast gives the clearest horizon, including Hov, Eggum, Laukvik and Uttakleiv. Mountains can hide the sun elsewhere.

Is it dark at all in summer?

Not during the midnight sun window. Bring something to darken your room, since the nights are bright.

Can I hike at night under the midnight sun?

Only when conditions are safe. Brightness does not prove a route is safe. Wind, fog and rain still make steep hikes dangerous, and the season for the big climbs is May to September.

Is lofotenislands.org the official site?

No. This is an independent guide with no link to the municipalities, tourism organisations, ferry companies or tour operators it mentions.
