Northern lights in Lofoten: the short version
The northern lights need three things: darkness, a clear sky and solar activity. In the Lofoten Islands that means the dark part of the year, roughly September to April. You cannot book a sighting, and no tour guarantees one. What you can do is choose a dark place with a view to the north and give yourself several nights.
A guided minibus tour from Svolvær runs from 1 September to 1 April. The tour takes about 4 hours, and adult tickets cost NOK 1,295.

When to see the northern lights in Lofoten
Darkness sets the season. Weather decides the night.
Season
The lights can show from the end of August into mid-April, when nights are dark enough. As a planning guide, think September to April. The minibus tour is sold from 1 September to 1 April, but the sky itself does not follow a sales calendar.
What you need
You need darkness, enough clear sky and some solar activity. A high KP number is not a requirement on the north coast, so a quiet forecast does not rule out a night outside. Cloud is the usual spoiler.
The polar night
Around 7 December to 5 January the sun stays below the horizon. Midday still brings twilight. The dark days leave long evenings for the sky, and winter weather can change quickly.
Weather in Lofoten →Give it several nights
One clear night is luck, not a promise. Plan at least a few evenings, check the sky before dark and stay flexible.
Best time to visit →Where to watch the northern lights
Look for a place with little light and an open view to the north. Beaches on the north coast with a free northern horizon are the places to try. Check a map for mountains that block the sky before you drive out.
Henningsvær has a raised spot behind the football pitch that works as a photo location. Stay on public ground and keep off the pitch and private land at night. The page on Henningsvær covers the village itself.
Uttakleiv is one of the outer-coast beaches. Parking there is charged: cars and motorcycles up to 3.5 t pay NOK 60 per started 3 hours, motorhomes NOK 100 per 3 hours, with a maximum of NOK 300 per 24 hours for these vehicles. Leave the E10 only at proper parking places. Do not stop on the road for photos.

Children under 12 are not recommended on this tour, even though child prices start at age 8. For most visitors, a guided minibus is the easiest way to reach dark places without driving at night yourself. If you have a car and the time, watching on your own costs less but gives you no local guide.
Practical tips for a night outside
Dress in warm layers, with boots, a hat and gloves. Bring a thermos and a headlamp with a red light setting. Keep your camera battery warm in an inner pocket and use a tripod.
Drive slowly on winter roads and use proper parking places. In the Lofotodden National Park, drones are not allowed without a permit. Stay on paths near cliffs and beaches in the dark. The page on Lofoten tours compares the other trips on offer in the cold months.
Daytime fills easily in winter. The RIB sea eagle safaris and the fishing trip run almost all year, and the boat tours page explains how they differ. Plan the aurora evening around them, and keep a spare evening free in case clouds cover the sky on the first night.
